Most iron supplements use ferrous sulfate. It's cheap to manufacture and it's been the pharmacy default for decades.
The problem with ferrous sulfate is that it breaks apart in stomach acid. This causes the iron to irritate the gut lining, bind to food, and get blocked by calcium, caffeine, and tannins before it reaches the small intestine where absorption actually happens.
